Optically variable pigment (OVP) shows one colour when viewed straight on and a different colour at an angle. That angle-dependent colour shift — the same principle used in banknotes — makes it a powerful, hard-to-replicate brand-protection tool.

Thin-film interference, not absorption

OVP is built from dozens of nanometre-scale layers of contrasting refractive index. Light reflecting from the many interfaces interferes constructively at different wavelengths depending on the viewing angle, producing a clean green→gold (or blue→red, etc.) shift that cannot be photocopied or scanned accurately.

Application notes

Best applied as a screen or intaglio ink, hot-stamp foil, or thin coating layer where the shift is visible to the naked eye. For security, combine with a unique pattern so the colour alone is not the only defence.

Q: Can OVP be copied by a printer? A: A standard CMYK or even metallic print cannot reproduce the true angular interference shift; it can mimic the two endpoint colours but not the continuous sweep, which is what verification relies on.
Q: Is OVP the same as chameleon pearl? A: Related but distinct. Chameleon pearl gives a decorative two-tone lustre; OVP gives a high-contrast, security-grade shift. Choose by intent.
