The same luster dust that transforms a celebration cake into a metallic showpiece can just as easily produce a streaky, patchy or clumped result. The difference is almost never the pigment — it is dosage, carrier and application technique. This guide covers the three application routes we see most often and the failure modes behind each.

Dosage: start low, build up

Luster pigments are effect pigments, not tinting pigments. Adding more does not deepen the colour; it flattens the luster because particles begin to stack and scatter light randomly instead of aligning. As an industry starting point, most applications sit in a low single-digit percentage range by weight of the finished medium — but the correct figure depends on your particle size, your binder opacity and your target effect. Always run a ladder test rather than trusting a generic number.

Three application routes and their control points

The four failure modes — and their causes

  • Streaking: insufficient carrier or brushing over semi-dry medium. Re-wet or switch to airbrush.
  • Loss of shine after drying: too much pigment stacked, or a dulling carrier film. Reduce loading, use a clear carrier.
  • Sedimentation in drinks: density mismatch between mica and the liquid. Choose finer grades and match the liquid's density; expect to agitate before service.
  • Colour shift under humid storage: usually a moisture problem, not a pigment problem. See storage below.

Storage and shelf life

Mica-based luster pigments are mineral and chemically stable; the limiting factor is usually moisture uptake and cross-contamination in the kitchen. Keep containers sealed, dry, away from strong odours, and never re-use a wet spoon. Product shelf life should be quoted on your supplier's TDS and re-confirmed on the batch COA — in practice, an unopened, correctly stored container far outlives the typical product cycle.

Q: Why does my gold look green after airbrushing? A: Usually a carrier or substrate issue, not the pigment. A yellow-toned carrier or a strongly coloured base coat shifts the perceived hue. Test the carrier alone on a white substrate.
Q: Can edible glitter and luster dust be used interchangeably? A: No. "Glitter" implies a flake with a visible particle edge; "luster dust" is a fine powder giving a smooth metallic sheen. They are different products with different mouthfeel and application routes.
