
Leather finishing and industrial printing look like unrelated industries, but they share a common failure signature: the effect pigment is fine in the bucket and wrong on the substrate. In both cases the cause is usually the process window rather than the pigment.
Effect pigments in leather are normally applied in the finishing system rather than impregnated into the hide. The typical stack is a base coat that seals and colours, an effect coat carrying the pearl pigment, and a top coat that protects the effect and sets the final gloss level. Each layer has its own penalty for getting it wrong:

Additional leather-specific factors: the natural grain varies across a hide, so the same formulation reads differently on the belly and the back; flexing and abrasion in the finished article will seek out any under-bound pigment; and softness requirements limit how much film you can build.
Q: Can the same grade be used for leather and for packaging print?A: Often yes at the chemistry level, but the particle size that suits a soft leather finish is rarely the one that suits a high-impact printed carton. Specify per application.
